My Breath Stinks:
How to Get Rid of Bad Breath...NOW!
How
You Brush Your Teeth and Halitosis
Most of people can remember a time when they
were little, and hearing parents telling them to brush their
teeth so they won’t fall out. This makes absolutely no sense
to most children because their teeth were falling out anyway.
Parents had the right idea, in that if kids don’t brush their
teeth, be it permanent or otherwise, they will not only fall
out, they will rot first. This, of course, causes great discomfort
and possible pain before they fall out.
Is it enough to simply go in the bathroom once or twice daily,
squeeze a bit of toothpaste on the brush and scrub, rinse and
spit? Many people think this is adequate, but it is not. There
is actually a proper brushing technique that will remove food
particles lodged between the teeth. If this is done correctly,
it will go along way to ensure that the teeth will neither
rot nor fall out. The proper for term for that is gum disease
(periodontitis). So look at the proper techniques for brushing:
- Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle
- Brush in short back and forth motions on the outer surfaces
of the teeth
- Use a back and forth motion for chewing surfaces
- Use short, 45-degree angle strokes along the gum line
- Brush backside of frontal teeth, using gentle up and down
strokes with tip of brush
Is
using toothpaste with fluoride really that important? What
exactly does fluoride accomplish towards oral health? Fluoride
hardens the outer enamel layer of the teeth and could possibly
stop a cavity as it is trying to form. This most definitely
gives you more resistance to future cavities.
Think about the hundreds of the toothbrushes that are available
on the market today. Does the type of toothbrush make a difference
in the over all care of the teeth and gums? Well, everyone
is different and it would be safe to say that everyone’s teeth
and gums are different also. Some may be sensitive, and some
may not. Some may be able to open their mouth wide and some
may not. Therefore, they make toothbrushes in different sizes,
and bristle types. If that weren’t enough, add in the name
brands, along with the generic and the power toothbrushes with
electric toothbrushes and it can get a bit overwhelming. Trial
and error is the way to find the toothbrush that is right for
you. A power toothbrush definitely will work faster at getting
rid of the debris that gets stuck in between your teeth and
gums but not everyone prefers that type of toothbrush. Find
the type of toothbrush that works for you and use it diligently.
If you chose a power toothbrush follow these steps to ensure
proper removal of the debris in between your teeth and gums:
- Guide the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth, following
the curve of the gum and the shape of each tooth.
- Hold the brush head in place for a few seconds before moving
on to the next tooth.
- Do not forget to reach all areas, including the inner and
chewing surfaces, and behind your back teeth.
- Direct the brush head along the gum line. It is not necessary
to press hard or scrub. Simply let the brush do all the work.
What
are the consequences of not brushing your teeth properly? The bacteria that are making a home in your mouth will continue
to do so with the consequence your breath will stink! Instead
of having beautiful white teeth they will turn an ugly yellowish-brown
color, possibly even black. They will soon begin to fall out
and you will have a tooth missing here and a tooth missing
there. If missing teeth aren’t enough, you will soon find that
your breath odor will continue to decline.
Your gums will become red and swollen and start bleeding and
if your breath wasn’t bad yet – it will be positively disgusting
now. How about a visual of this: you walk up to your friends
(if you still have some by this time) and begin to speak. If
they do not fall over from the sheer power of the noxious fumes
and they actually get a glimpse of your mouth they will see
a few teeth gone, the ones that are left are various shades
of yellow-to-black, and pus and blood is coming forth. Taking
proper care of your teeth and gums is a much better alternative.
