Avoid
Dating Pitfalls at the Workplace
- by KissMeGoodnight.com
Dating in the workplace can be a tricky situation
that is filled with both documented company policies as well
as unwritten rules. Violating the company policies
or the unwritten rules can have a negative impact on your career. For this reason
it is recommended that you proceed with extreme caution when
it comes to dating in the workplace. Some of the repercussions
that can stem from becoming involved in a romantic relationship
in the workplace include loss of promotions, resentment from
colleagues and even the loss of your job. These are all serious
situations that necessitate that you pay strict attention to
policy regarding dating in the workplace.
Many
companies have a policy that prohibits employees from dating
their supervisors while other companies have a policy
that prohibits employees from dating any other employee of
the company. For this reason it is important to make sure that
you fully understand the policies of your company before you
even consider entering into a dating relationship with another
employee of the company. If company policy specifically prohibits
fraternization, then it is best to avoid getting involved in
an office romance. Even if your company policy does not prohibit
you from dating in the workplace, it is advisable to keep your
relationships from becoming common knowledge around the office.
One
common pitfall that stems from dating in the workplace
can be the loss of a well-deserved promotion or rise. While
sexual harassment laws often protect you from being passed
over for raises and promotions because you refuse to enter
into a relationship with your superior, it is possible that
your relationship with a co-worker can impact your standing
with the company. Although it may be unfair, it is likely that
you will not be taken very seriously if your office romance
becomes common knowledge. It may never be spoken that the reason
you didn’t get the promotion was your relationship, it may
very well be the cause. If your co-workers and supervisors
don’t take you seriously then you will have a difficult time
climbing the corporate ladder.
Becoming
involved in a relationship with your supervisor can pave
the way for resentment to fester among your co-workers. If they begin to suspect that you are receiving favorable treatment
because of your relationship, they will become resentful of
you and may also ostracize you for fear that you will allow
your boss to become privy to conversations between co-workers
that may affect their standing in the company. For example
if your co-workers believe that you are given a choice office
or the opportunity to work on an exciting relationship based
on your relationship with the boss and not your merit, they
will be resentful of the advantages you are being given. They
may even bring their complaints to upper management, which
can be very detrimental to your career if you are found to
be guilty of the allegations. To avoid this pitfall it is wise
to either keep your relationship private or work extra hard
to ensure that your partner does not give you preferential
treatment that may make others in the company jealous.
Finally, if there is a specific company policy that prohibits
employees of the company from dating each other, then you
could lose your job over your relationship. It won’t matter whether
or not you are aware of the specific policy and the ramifications
for violating the policy, as ignorance of the policy is not
an excuse for violating the policy. Many companies ask you
to sign a form verifying that you received a copy of the employee
handbook when you were hired. Signing this form not only verifies
that you received the handbook but also holds you accountable
for abiding by the policies presented in the handbook. If your
company has a zero tolerance policy regarding office romances,
you can be fired immediately if you are found to be involved
in a relationship with another employee. To avoid this pitfall,
be aware of company policies and if your company prohibits
employees from each other then do not get involved in a relationship
in the workplace.
Besides
the fact that dating in the workplace can be lead to awkwardness
if the relationship doesn’t last, many companies
have explicit policies that prohibit employees from dating
each other. If the policy is written, then violating the policy
can have dire consequences such as losing your job. Even if
the company policy does not prohibit employees from dating
there can be serious consequences such as not being taken seriously
and resentment from co-workers that arise from office romances.
