Boys:
What to Expect During Puberty
Puberty
for young boys usually starts around
the age of ten though can be anywhere between the ages of ten
and sixteen. Puberty will end on average around the ages of
fourteen and eighteen. Primary changes that will occur in the
young boy include:
Hair
begins to grow on your face, your pubic area, under your
arms and on your legs. You begin to grow taller and put some
weight on. As you grow taller you will not do it all at once,
this growth comes in spurts. You find that as soon as you bought
a new pair of jeans they are too small. This is normal and
part of the growing process. Your voice begins to deepen. This
is now known as “cracking.” As you speak, your voice will have
different pitches as you make the transition into a young man.
Your body begins to produce sperm and you have to be careful
because now you can get a girl pregnant. Your body goes through
many changes as you grow up. Puberty is the time when these
changes occur.
Boys do not have one definitive sign that says they are growing
up. They have many signs, which we discussed briefly growing
body hair, voice changing, and producing sperm. Although the
times of puberty usually starts around the ages of ten to fifteen
a boy’s body will begin puberty when it is ready and not wait
for a specific age. The age range is a guideline only. Here
are some questions many boys have regarding puberty.
Will
I get muscles? You may notice that your friends are getting
a wider chest or their arm muscles are developing. This is
natural during puberty and will happen to you. Remember that
all boys develop at different ages. So while some boys are
getting muscles some other boys may remain tall and slim. Have
you considered lifting weights? If you have not reached puberty
you will not see any progress towards building muscles but
you will be toning the muscles you have. Eating right and exercising
will always help and keep you fit, as you are moving into puberty.
Rest is important to allow your body to grow. Give your body
a break every day.
Are
the girls becoming more interesting to you? Do your hands
become hot and sweaty when she says anything to you? Do you
think about her more and more? This is very natural and you
could be experiencing your first crush. Then again, you may
not be feeling anything at all right now. That is also perfectly
normal as we discussed earlier, everyone has their own period
that they enter puberty.
If you are experiencing these types of feelings, it is because
the hormones in your body are increasing. One affect is that
you will begin having more feelings towards certain people.
There are times these feelings can be very confusing and may
leave you afraid. Do not worry about this these feelings are
very normal
As the hormones in your body continue to increase, you start
to have more and more feelings. These feelings may be confusing
at times. It is very natural to feel afraid as this is happening
but rest assured it is very natural. You are becoming a young
man. It is important to remember that you do not have to go
through this alone. If you are not comfortable talking with
a family member go to a trusted friend or a teacher.
Body
hair begins growing rapidly during puberty. Some boys
will start to notice facial hair growing. Body hair will also
begin to grow on the legs, arms, chest, and pubic areas. The
reason for growing hair in these many new places is that your
body is changing and entering adolescence. Your body is now
producing testosterone and this hormone travels through your
bloodstream and tells various parts of your body to grow hair.
You do not have to help the hair grow or take care of it in
any way at this time. Soon when you are a teenager, you may
consider shaving.
You may notice that your body
odor has increased. This is
nothing bad and simply means that it is time to find a deodorant
that you like. As you go through puberty and the hormones are
working overtime, you may find that you are sweating more than
you were before. Again, this is very normal and is another
sign that your body is doing exactly what it is supposed to
do.
As puberty nears, you will find that you begin having more
erections. Again, the hormones are racing through your body
preparing you for adolescence. Your penis gets hard by the
blood flow increasing. # # # # #
