Your Sexual Health
Diseases
and Illnesses May Affect Your Sex Life
How
can problems with your health affect your sex life? There are many ways. If your health is not optimal
then our desire for sex is not strong either. Not only can
disability and illness affect our overall stamina and desire
there can be medical complications such as infertility and
erectile dysfunctions. Those individuals who struggle with
physical illnesses and/or disabilities often wonder if they
will be able to experience the joy of a loving, sexual experience
that they see many around them enjoying. Contrary to a common
belief, a person who has lost the ability to feel in the genital
region can still enjoy the sexual experience, but many with
a disability often give up on finding this pleasure.
Many emotions and questions are in the forefront of the person
who has experienced an illness or disability. They will be
angry at their situation and/or loss and even grieve over the
inability to function in the way they used to be able too.
Some illnesses or diseases that can have an effect on our sexual
health include but are not limited too:
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Heart Disease
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Psychiatric Disabilities
- Autoimmune disorders
Our emotions also play a role in our sexual health. Here are
some of the ways that emotions affect the way we think of and
perform sexually. There is a connection between our mind and
body. You may have heard someone say that if you think you
are happy, even if you are not, soon you will be happy. This
same principal applies to our sex life. Even if we may not
at the moment feel like having sex with our partner, if we
keep telling ourselves we want to soon we will. What are some
of the signs that signal there may be an imbalance in our emotions?
- Back pain
- Increase or decrease in appetite
- Chest pain or panic attacks
- Change in bowels
- Dry Mouth
- Insomnia or excessive fatigue
- Change in weight
If you are experiencing any physical ailments or disabilities
there are still ways to enjoy sex, let us look at some options
available.
Arthritis
- the pain that arthritis suffers experience can
be severe and sex can be uncomfortable. If you suffer from
this, you may want to consider surgery for joint replacement.
There are several medications on the market to alleviate pain.
Exercise, rest, and warm baths will also help with pain. You
may want to think about having sex during the times when the
pain is not pronounced. Chronic
Pain – is characterized by lasting for several months
or more. The pain may be there one month, disappear for a little
while, and then return. When you experience chronic pain it
can affect your sleep patterns, lead to depression, possible
isolation and the inability to move. Obviously, this type of
pain can also interfere with sexual health.
Diabetes
- men who are affected with diabetes do not usually
have problems with sexual function except for the few that
experience impotence, which can be caused by diabetes. There
are treatments available if you suffer from impotence caused
by diabetes.
Heart
Disease – one of the symptoms of heart disease is the
inability for blood to flow freely. The penis needs blood flow
in order to maintain an erection; therefore, if the blood cannot
flow an erection cannot be maintained. Then there is the free
that once a man has experienced a heart attack participating
in the sexual act may trigger another one. There is a simple
standard to determine if a man is ready for sex: if he can
climb two flights of stairs without losing his breath or having
any pain then he is considered well enough to engage in sexual
activity.
Incontinence
– is the inability to control the flow of urine.
This increases with age, can be embracing, and seems to happen
more to women than men do. The leaks can occur during exercise
or when you laugh, sneeze, or even cough. Incontinence may
even occur during sex due to the increased pressure on your
bladder. There is no need to stop having sex. Speak to your
doctor and he/she will discuss options with you. # # # # #
