Groomsmen
and Best Man: Responsibilities
Your
best friend just asked you to be the best man at his wedding. Have you ever done this before? Do
you have the slightest clue what it entails? Well, this is
a huge honor, and carries a very large set of responsibilities.
There are many benefits to being the best man. Knowing that
you were there for your friend in that capacity is a wonderful
way to show you truly are a great man. Definitely one of the
most entertaining aspects will surely be the planning and executing
of the bachelor party, or sometimes known as the stag. Fun
aside, just what kind of responsibilities does being the best
man carry? This is where you will find out a few important
functions and chores that come with being the best man, we
will also look at the role the groomsman have in the wedding,
as well.
Many times this can feel like a job and the groom is your
employer. That is without mentioning the owner of the company,
the bride. With so much on the groom’s plate, and them feeling
overwhelmed, it is your role to take up some of the slack to
make their life and the big day easier. Here is a brief overview
of what can be expected from you as the best man, this of course
being that the wedding is a good old fashion traditional affair.
The
biggest and sometimes most stressing job of the best man
is definitely the toast. This is where the best man says a
few words at the rehearsal dinner, then the reception about
the groom and the couple themselves, congratulations and words
of encouragement are the way to do this without making anyone
mad. Keeping the rings is indeed a very big job. It entails
making sure you do not loose them, as this would undoubtedly
make for a very bad day. It can easily make the already stressed
to the max groom an angry fellow. Make sure you keep them tight
in your care. Another very important job for the best man is
to ensure that the groom gets to the ceremony on time. Many
times, the best man gets a tongue-lashing from the bride and
the family, for not making sure he is there on time. He needs
to be there, and it is your job to make sure that happens.
On to the marriage license and the sheer importance of that
document. It is your responsibility to hold this license until
it needs to be signed. The document will need to be signed
by the bride and groom, you, the maid of honor, and the officiator.
What ever you do, make sure you keep a grip on this license
and not lose it.
A wonderful gift for the bride and groom would for you to
pay for the officiator discretely, and privately. It must be
done this way if the groom is giving you the money to pay or
not. However, what a wonderful token of friendship it would
be to take it out of your own pocket. Making sure that all
the ushers or groomsmen are in order and are fitted for their
tuxedos and the accessories is another important job. It is
always a nice gesture as well, if you offer to help the groom
pack for the honeymoon and have his going away outfit prepared
and waiting. Helping with the luggage for their trip as also
a good idea, so they have less to worry about when it is time
to leave. Ensuring the groom has the proper documents such
as airline tickets and passports is also a good idea, as many
things are forgotten the busy realm of matrimony. Having been
designated best man means you are pretty much responsible for
the ring bearer, and the groomsmen. Making sure everyone knows
their place and their roll will ensure a smooth and hopefully
trouble free ceremony, leading all the way into the end of
the reception. Basically the role of the best man is to be
the right hand of the groom, ensuring all goes smooth and according
to plan. It is truly an honor to be asked to be the best man
at your friends wedding show them they made the right choice
by being most of all their best friend.
